1. All students must read the required book for the grade level they are
entering. This book should probably be read closer to the beginning of
the school year since we will be discussing it in class the first two weeks.
Grade 6 – Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
Grade 7 – Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Grade 8 – The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
2. In addition to the required book students must choose two books from
their grade level reading list and complete the following assignments.
a) Create a glossary. As you read, pay close attention to new vocabulary
words. Keep a list of words (10-15 is plenty) that are unfamiliar to
you and are important to your understanding of the book. Look these
words up in a dictionary. For each, write a definition in your own
words.
Example: learning- when a person is able to gain knowledge or skill.
b) Choose ONE of the following:
a. Interview a character from the book. Write 15 open ended questions the interviewer asks and create the answers the character might provide.
b. Create a story map of the setting of the story. Design the map and make sure you mark the places where each important event occurred. Be creative.
c. Design at least 7-10 illustrations, with appropriate captions, for the book that portray important events of the book.
Please make sure to bring your assignments to class the first day of school. We encourage you to read more books on your grade list!
